Ollantaytambo – Llaqtapata – Huayllabamba
The adventure begins in Ollantaytambo at 2,792 meters — a living Inca town and the perfect launchpad for what lies ahead. After a quick stop for any last-minute gear, we transfer to Kilometer 82 of the railway line at Piscacucho, where boots hit the trail for the first time. The snow-capped peak of Veronica Mountain towers above as the Urubamba River guides our steps into the heart of the Andes, surrounded by stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. Around three hours in, we reach Llaqtapata for lunch and a fascinating visit to the archaeological site. From there, we make our steady ascent to Huayllabamba at 3,000 meters, where camp is set and the stars take over. 12 km | 6 hrs | Highest point: 3,000m

Huayllabamba – Warmiwanusca – Pacaymayo
Today is the big one. After a hearty breakfast, we set our sights on Warmiwanusca — the Dead Woman's Pass — at 4,215 meters, the highest and most legendary point on the entire Inca Trail. We leave the villages behind and push deep into ancient Andean forests, where Inca mysticism hangs in the air and the outside world feels very far away. As we climb, the lush vegetation gives way to sweeping ichu grasslands and the trail opens dramatically to the sky. At the summit, the jaw-dropping panorama of the Vilcabamba and Vilcanota mountain ranges makes every burning step worth it. We descend to Llulluchapata for a well-earned lunch, then continue down to Pacaymayo at 3,600 meters, where camp is waiting. You've conquered the hardest day — celebrate. 11 km | 8 hrs | Highest point: 4,215m

Pacaymayo – Winaywayna
Today the Inca Trail reveals its greatest treasures. This is the stretch that few travellers ever get to see — extraordinary archaeological sites, perfectly preserved and accessible only on foot through this ancient route. We make one final push to the Runcuracay Pass at 3,900 meters for another breathtaking mountain panorama, then the descent begins in earnest. First up is Sayaqmarca, a dramatic urban center clinging to the edge of a cliff. Next, the extraordinary Conchamarca complex winds through spiral staircases and tunnels — a masterclass in Inca engineering. Lunch awaits at Phuyupatamarca, perched high on the mountainside and surrounded by sweeping terraces. We press on, stopping to explore the formidable terraces of Intipata before finally arriving at Wiñaywayna at 2,665 meters — an ancient agricultural wonder just a few kilometres from Machu Picchu itself. 16 km | 9 hrs | Highest point: 4,000m

Winaywayna – Inti Punku – Machu Picchu
The grand finale. We rise before dawn and set off through the cloud forest on an ancient cobblestone road so finely crafted that every stone seems to whisper that something extraordinary lies ahead. Through the trees and birdsong, we climb the final steps of the Inca Trail to Inti Punku — the Sun Gate — at 2,745 meters. And there it is. Machu Picchu, spread out below in all its glory, exactly as Inca travellers would have seen it centuries ago. Take a breath. Take a hundred photos. You've earned it. We make our way down into the sanctuary for a guided tour of the citadel, uncovering its history, mysteries, and the genius of the civilisation that built it. When the magic finally has to end, we board the bus back to Aguas Calientes and catch the train back to Ollantaytambo. 6 km | 3 hrs | Highest point: 2,700m
